Google Pixel 5

Intro

The Google Pixel 5 is an Android smartphone released by Google in late 2020.
It was the first main-line Google Pixel device to be released with a mid-range chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, instead of a flagship one like the previous year's Google Pixel 4(XL), which used a Snapdragon 855.

Other specs include:

  • 8 Gigabytes of LPDDR4 RAM;
  • 128 Gigabytes of UFS 2.1 Storage;
  • A (typical) 4080 milliAmp/Hours LiPo Battery:
  • An OLED display that supports standard (60Hz) and variable refresh rate modes (up to 90Hz);
  • A 5G-Capable Cellular Modem;
  • WiFi Connectivity (5GHz, a/b/g/n/ac dual-band);
  • Bluetooth 5.0;
  • NFC (see Google Pay);
  • GPS;
  • A dual camera system on the back of the device, consisting of a 12.2 MP resolution, ƒ/1.7 focal length, 27mm aperture, OIS stabilized main sensor, and a 16 MP, ƒ/2.2 ultra-wide sensor;
  • A front-facing camera embedded into the display with an 8 MP resolution and an ƒ/2.0 focal length.

A Pixel 5 running (seemingly) Android 11.

Software

The Pixel 5 was released with Android 11 at launch, but has received two out of three of its expected major updates: Android 12 and 13.
The device is expected to receive its last major Android update in late 2023 with the release of Android 14, with security updates continuing for a bit longer after that.
As with most Google devices, the Pixel 5 has received quite a bit of third-party support from the Open Source Software community, mostly in the form of customized builds of Android (whether that be the kernel or an entire OS package, a "custom ROM").
This will probably guarantee the usability of device for at least a few years after it loses official support from Google later this year.
For Modding Resources, I recommend you visit the Pixel 5's page at the XDA Developers forums here.
In short though, the steps needed to install a different OS or Kernel are as following:

  • Open the Settings app, Enable Developer Settings.
  • Enable "OEM Unlocking" in Developer Settings.
  • Shut down the device, press and hold the Vol - and Power buttons until the screen turns on.
  • If done correctly, you should see that your device has entered "Fastboot Mode".
  • Connect your Pixel 5 to a computer running Windows/macOS/Linux with the latest Android Platform Tools installed via USB.
  • WARNING!! This will wipe your internal storage. Open a Terminal Shell on your computer and run fastboot oem unlock .
  • You are now ready to flash a custom recovery, which will be used to install .zip packages (ROMs, Root, Kernels etc...).

Fun facts

  • The device's internal codename is redfin .
  • The earlier batches of Pixel 5s were prone to manufacturing defects, such as the display having an unreliable tint on opposite edges of the OLED, the display assembly having a significant gap from the plastic body of the phone (which might affect its IP68 waterproof rating), and the fingerprint sensor being unreliable.
  • While using the Pixel 5, a small green dot can sometimes be spotted blinking on the upper side of the display. This is actually the OLED display turning off a few pixels to allow the under-display proximity sensor to work correctly.
  • Google claims that the internal frame of the Pixel 5 is made entirely of recycled aluminium.
